About the American Leadership Forum - Mountain Valley Chapter

Our Vision is to improve the social, economic, and political fabric of the Greater Sacramento region through shared commitment to collaborative action.

Our Mission is to:

  • UNITE boundary-crossing leaders from a diversity of sectors throughout the Greater Sacramento region;
  • STRENGTHEN their leadership capacity through deepening relationships and transformative experiences; and
  • SERVE the community by working collaboratively to make significant positive contributions.

About the honorees

Thank you to all of our Fellows who submitted nominations for this year's Exemplary Leaders Awards recipients! Our selection committee chose three honorees for 2018: Daniel Hahn, Sacramento Police Chief (Class XV), Congresswoman Doris Matsui, and Faith Whitmore, CEO of the Sacramento Region Family Justice Center (Class II).

Chief Daniel Hahn has dedicated his service to building strong neighborhoods. As the Roseville Chief of Police, he created a Social Services Unit within RPD that is run by a full-time social worker who pairs officers with social services providers to work with the homeless and mentally ill. With a long-term commitment to build trust between community and police, he joined ALF's implicit bias initiative in 2016 and became an ALF trainer to share the cognitive science around bias. He was sworn in as Sacramento's Chief of Police in August 2017 and has focused on community policing alongside residents in diverse neighborhoods. In December, Daniel brought implicit bias training to over 60 managers within the Sacramento Police Department. Early on in his tenure, he understood the need to create bridges within the community and began conversations with community policing experts at UC Berkeley and Rutgers University. Although his efforts are focused on preventing incidents like the tragic events confronting our community in recent months, his commitment to Sacramento is lifelong and he continues to assess the department's policies and practices in partnership with the Center for Policing Equity.

Congresswoman Doris Matsui is committed to creating a vibrant region where families can live, work, and play. Representing California’s Sixth Congressional District, Congresswoman Matsui is a champion for increased flood protection for the Sacramento area, which has one of the highest flood risks in the country. She works passionately to increase public transportation options in Sacramento, including a transportation center in downtown Sacramento, light rail, and a streetcar system linking Sacramento and West Sacramento. She has worked to improve access to high quality health care in the greater Sacramento area and across the nation. Congresswoman Matsui’s efforts to boost clean energy manufacturing and create jobs has helped transform the Sacramento region into a clean-tech capitol. She also served as the co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues to advance the issues that matter most to women in the United States.

Faith Whitmore is a passionate community leader with a calling to serve. She was the first person at UC Santa Cruz to attain a bachelor’s degree in Peace Studies. She was one of the co-founders of the Resource Center for Nonviolence in Santa Cruz and later worked with the Catholic Worker Movement. Ordained a United Methodist minister, Faith served as Senior Pastor for 24 years at two churches in Sacramento. She accepted the position of Executive Director for Francis House, which assists homeless and poor in downtown Sacramento. Her career took a route she never could have imagined when she served as the District Director for Congressman Ami Bera. Currently, Faith is the CEO for the Sacramento Regional Family Justice Center, a collaborative non-profit that provides services to victims of domestic violence, elder abuse, human trafficking, sexual assault and child abuse.

We are looking forward to having you join us in recognizing our 2018 Exemplary Leaders Awards Honorees. Thank you for being a vital part of ALF-MVC!
